Stream Monitoring Project
What is the Stream Monitoring Project?
Students are currently building modified tide gauges to deploy on the streams around the Cal Poly Campus. These gauges will give valuable information regarding water levels and stormwater runoff within the CP watershed. Additionally, students are taking water samples for quality testing to better understand the pollutants on campus.
Why did this project begin?
This project first began as a precursor to our involvement in the EPA Rainworks Project (learn more about that from our Current Projects page). It's been difficult to find information about current or historical water levels/quality for Stenner and Brizzolara Creeks, so we've decided to take our own. These measurements, especially during the wet season, will help us better understand the dynamic of our watershed and the impact student infrastructure/activities have on stormwater runoff.
What is the commitment level?
While activities pertaining to the project vary on a week-to-week basis, there are generally 1-hour weekly meetings and up to 2-hour activities outside of those meetings.
Do I have to be a member or a specific major to participate?
While this project is only open to club members, any major is welcome to join! We currently have EE, CS, ENVM, ENVE, STAT, and other majors on the team -- all of whom are still learning about hydrology. If you have an interest, we'd love to have you.
How can I get involved?
